Roy Schilling
October 6, 1933 - March 3, 2013

Roy Gene, son of John and Emma (Schroeder) Schilling, was born October 6, 1933 at the family home in Aspinwall, Iowa. He was the third of five sons born to that family. Roy attended Aspinwall School. Following his schooling he started working for Frank Ehrichs at the Aspinwall Store. He then started working with his father in the carpentry business. Later he operated a feed grinder for Roy Soll.

In 1954 Roy went to work at the Aspinwall Co-op, a job he held until he was drafted in to United States Army in 1956. After his honorable discharge, Roy returned to the Co-op for several years until starting to work for Tommy Wolfe at the Manning Welding Shop. He opened his own welding business in 1965 in the basement of Sal Grundmeier Garage in Aspinwall. In 1970 he purchased the Sal Grundmeier residence and converted it into his own welding shop. Along with his welding and general blacksmith business, Roy also ran a corn-sheller and wrecker business.

Roy also had a band he led with his accordion, entertaining a great number of people with his old time polkas, waltzes and country music. He also played the guitar. Over the years he enjoyed traveling with his fishing buddies to Missouri. He also traveled to Mexico with Cliff Waterbury to deliver donated items to the needy there.

When Roy could no longer live alone he entered the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in the spring of 2012. The cancer in his body took a toll and his health deteriorated. He died at the Plaza on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at the age of 79 years, 4 months and 25 days.

Preceding Roy in death are his parents and brothers Alvin Schilling and Robert Schilling.

He is survived by two brothers Dewey Schilling of Norfolk, NE and Ron (Susan) Schilling of Aspinwall; sister in law Helen Schilling of Yuma, AZ; nieces and nephews Dave (Linda) Schilling and family of Huxley; Mary (Mike) St Clair and family of Ankeny; Christian (Bridgette) Schilling of Carroll; Jeff (Shyla) Schilling and family of Joplin MO; Diane (Charles) Cordery and family of Yuma, AZ; cousins; other relatives and many friends.
