“Mrs. Sarah Smith dies Saturday At Country Home.”
“Had Been Ill For Some Time; Heat Hastens Her Death”

“Mrs. Sarah Wirt Smith, 89, died at the home of her son, James Smith, south of Harlan, Saturday. Mrs. Smith suffered from a paralytic stroke six years ago, and had been in ill health since that time. The intense heat over this section of the country, was thought to have hastened her death.

Mrs. Smith was well known here, having came to Shelby county fifty-four years ago and has made her residence near Harlan since that time.

Mrs. Sarah Wirt Smith was born Oct. 18, 1846. She was married to Jabez Smith, Sept. 5, 1867. To this union five children were born: W. J. Smith, deceased, Mrs. A. P. Taylor of New Hampton, Mrs. E. L. Nichols [Nicholas] of Crofton, Neb.; Ira G. Smith of Pender, Neb., and James H. Smith of Harlan.

Her husband came to his death in an accidental drowning in 1881.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, from the Pauley Funeral Home at 9 o’clock, with the Rev. C. Willliam Bast, officiating. Burial was made at Sabula.”
