Mary Ann Poole, age 77, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, passed away July 20, 2012, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

Mary Ann was born February 24, 1935, in Council Bluffs to the late Nicholas T. and Gertrude E. (Turner) Sondag. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1953. Mary Ann married Dale Poole on September 5, 1954, in Council Bluffs. They were blessed with five children.

Mary Ann continued with her schooling, earning her Associate's Degree in Ministry from Creighton University. She worked 15 years as religious education director at St. Patrick's Parish in Neola, Iowa, and Queen of the Apostles Parish in Council Bluffs, retiring in 2006. Mary Ann was an accomplished painter, teaching paint classes out of her home and at St. Albert Middle School. She was a member of Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church; Council Bluffs Art Association; St. Albert Ambassador; and a long-time volunteer for the St. Albert Benefit Auction.

Mary Ann is survived by her husband of 57 years, Dale Poole; daughters, Joni (Dave) Schnitker, and Jenny Van Soelen, all of Council Bluffs; sons, Gordy (Ceci) Poole, of Austin, Texas, Dan (Angel) Poole, and David Poole, all of Council Bluffs; grandchildren, Nick, Will and Ben Van Soelen, Jeremy, Lindsay and Kylie Schnitker, Megan Poole, Sarah and Kellen Poole; sister, Jeanne (Harry) Langdon, of Kansas City, Mo.; nieces and nephews.

Prayer service will be Monday, 6 p.m., followed by visitation with the family until 8 p.m. at Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, 10 a.m., also at Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church. Reverend Joel McNeil, pastor, will be the celebrant. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery, with a lunch following at the church. Memorials are suggested to St. Albert schools or Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church.
