2 killed in Iowa collision

A two-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon in Shelby County east of Harlan, Iowa, left two people dead and another critically injured, authorities say.

John Smith, 63, of Portsmouth, Iowa, and Dennis Johnson, 64, of Luverne, Minn., were killed in the 4:35 p.m. crash. Mary Louise Smith, 68, of Portsmouth was critically injured and flown by a medical helicopter to an area hospital.

Authorities said John Smith was driving a 1998 GMC Envoy and pulling a boat west on Iowa Highway 44 just east of Portsmouth when he took a right-hand curve and crossed the center line into the eastbound lane of Johnson’s 2011 International semitrailer truck.

Authorities said Johnson spotted Smith’s Envoy in the eastbound lane and attempted to avoid a collision by braking and steering toward the south side of the highway’s ditch before the vehicles crashed.
