DENISON, Iowa -- Edna Wenzel, 93, of Denison died Saturday, March 3, 2012, at Denison Care Center.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Burial will be in Nishnabotna Cemetery, Manilla, Iowa. Visitation wil be 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Funeral services for 93 year old Edna Wenzel of Denison will be held at 10am on Thursday, March 8 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with burial in the Nishnabotna Cemetery in Manilla. She passed away on Saturday, March 3 at the Denison Care Center in Denison. Survivors include her nieces and nephews: Betty (Dennis) Akers of Walnut; Terry (Shelly) Saunders of Harlan; Peggy (Kenneth) Lappe of Atlantic; Susan (Brian) Hunter; and Tim (Lisa) Jones all of Strasburg, PA; other relatives and friends. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison is in charge of arrangements. Friends may call 1 hour prior to the service on Thursday morning, March 8th, at the church.

Obituary, Edna Wenzel

Edna Marie Wenzel was born September 11, 1918, the daughter of John Christin and Louisa Lengeman Joens. She passed away on Saturday, March 3, 2012, at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa, at the age of ninety-three.

Edna was born in Shelby County, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ in 1927 at the Methodist Church in Manilla, Iowa, and confirmed on April 6, 1944, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. She received her education in the Manilla School District, now known as IKM (Irwin-Kirkman-Manilla), graduating with the class of 1937. Edna received her degree in Elementary Education from Drake University in 1958. She taught for 43 years at various rural schools, the Vail Public School, and the Ar-We-Va Community School.

Edna was united in marriage to Henry Carl Wenzel on August 15, 1941, in Raymond, South Dakota. She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, having been a member of the Ladies Aid, Fellowship Club, and Christian Craft Group, making many quilts.

Edna was a chaperone for the Ar-We-Va girl’s basketball team for 20 years as she loved basketball. She also chaperoned many band trips, enjoying volunteering for school activities. Edna taught adult crochet and knitting classes, another favorite pastime of hers. She served in various capacities with American Legion Auxiliary Unit 132 of Manilla for many years, and was a member of the Crawford County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Retired School Personnel Group, Friendly Farmers Club, and the Farm Bureau. Edna loved to travel, crochet, quilt, dance, play cards, and socialize with her family and friends.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry in 1990; two brothers, Arnold and Edwin; and one sister-in-law, Emma. She is survived by nieces and nephews: Betty and her husband, Dennis; Terry and his wife, Shelly; Peggy and her husband, Kenneth; Susan and her husband, Brian and their daughter Helana; and Tim and his wife, Lisa; other relatives and friends.
