Rachel Ellen Burkey

Rachel Ellen Burkey, age 84, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, passed away January 28, 2012, at the Hospice House in Omaha, Neb., after a brief illness.

She was born in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, on November 15, 1927, to the late Arthur and Grace (Glassburner) Bryan. She graduated from Harlan High School in 1946. Rachel worked for the Union Pacific Rail Road and later for First Federal Savings and Loan, retiring in 1983.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, John, Leon, Gilbert, Marion, Barbara and Arthur Jr.

Rachel is survived by her husband, Vernon Burkey to whom she married April 17, 1949; children, Susan Burkey, Ann Jones (Kevin), Gale Nagunst (Jeff), Ellen Johnson (Mike), Mark Burkey (Beth), Eric Burkey (Brenda); sister-in-law, Betty Bryan; 13 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; a host of other family and friends.

Rachel's request was to be cremated and her ashes will be buried in the Cedar Lawn Cemetery on Saturday morning. The family will receive friends on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m., at the Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home & Crematory. A celebration of her life will begin at 1 p.m. A reception will follow the service in the Hoy-Kilnoski Community Room.

Rachel Ellen Burkey of Council Bluffs passed away January 28, 2012 at the Hospice House in Omaha after a brief illness. She was born in Mt.
