John, I did find an article, with the first portion shared below, that describes the location as seven miles from the city. You may already have this, but I thought I would share anyway. Maybe the seven mile reference will help you pin down the location?

TWO DIE IN EXPLOSION
ENGINEER AND FIREMAN LOSE LIVES IN ACCIDENT ON ROCK ISLAND ROAD

Occurs on Dutchman's Grade, Seven Miles West of the City on the Main Line.

TWO ENGINES PULLING TRAIN

Freight Was Being Taken up by Two Locomotives-Four Men Injured in the Explosion.

The Boiler of engine No. 1465, pulling an extra freight to Des Moines, Omaha and Points West on the Rock Island, exploded at 7:25 O'clock Sunday night, when at Dutchman's grade. About seven miles west of Davenport on the main line.
