Smith orphans in 1900

SMITH, REMACKEL, HALFMAN, ARENS

There are three Smith children orphans listed in the Soldiers Orphan home in 1900. They are: Robert born July, 1887, Clarence born November 1891 and Bessie E. born April, 1889. ... all born in Iowa. Are there any newspapers of that period that may reveal what happened to their parents and If there were more siblings and who adopted them? Does the Soldiers Home currently have and reveal such records? My adopted grandfather was likely Francis Smith born July, 1892 in Davenport, IA. His parents supposedly died when he was an infant.

He was adopted by Jacob and Anna (Halfman) Remackel sometime, somewhere, between his birth in July 1892 and his baptism on January 27, 1893 at St. John's in Arcadia, IA.
