Roger F. Irey

May 21, 1938–July 3, 2022

DAVENPORT-Roger F. Irey, 84, of Davenport, IA, passed away in his home surrounded by family on Sunday, July 3, 2022, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Roger F. Irey was born May 21, 1938, in Monmouth, IL, the son of Rex and Janet Irey. He married Carol Johnston on July 1, 1960. They shared three children and celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary two days before his death.

Roger graduated from Monmouth High School in 1956. He worked for Alcoa for 40 years, retiring in 2000. He devoted his time thereafter to family and amassing many fishing tales. Roger was a member of USW Local 105, Alcoa 25 Year Club and Catfish Jazz Society. He was from a large family, with five siblings to help shape him into a kind, dependable, driven adult. He was a devoted husband and father, prioritizing family above all else. He was a great story teller, with a memory for details that others could only dream to have. He enjoyed fishing, family gatherings, Iowa Hawkeyes football and basketball, Chicago Cubs baseball, gardening, car shows (especially collector and classic), music festivals, snorkeling, air shows, travel with family, the outdoors, his extensive music collection, sunsets and sandy dead end roads. Home was his happiest place of all, though.

Roger is survived by his wife, Carol Irey, of Davenport, IA; his children, Sheryl Irey of Davenport, IA, Richard Irey of Coralville, IA and Julie (Pat) Minnucci of Peachtree Corners, GA; his siblings, Connie Swenson, Anne (Dennis) Kohlmeyer, Kay (Cecil) Lovdahl, Burgett "John" (Jo) Irey and Lynn Irey; his grandson, Sean Seaton; his great grandchildren, Patrick Seaton and Reagan Seaton; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, John "Jack" Swenson; daughter-in-law, Mary Irey; nephews, Eric Kohlmeyer and Johnnie Irey.

Services are pending due to Roger's decision to donate his body to science.

Roger will continue to be deeply loved and missed beyond measure. If you'd like to memorialize him, his family would be pleased to learn of your donation to a charity of your choice in his name.
