George R. Saklar, 74, of LeClaire, Iowa, passed away May 7, 2022 after a courageous battle with cancer.

A private memorial service will be held at Trimble Funeral Home & Crematory, Moline, Illinois. Memorials in his name may be directed to St. Jude’s Children Hospital.

George was born February 13, 1948 in Omaha, NE, the son of George and Colleen Saklar.

George graduated from Davenport Central High School in 1966 and attended the University of Iowa. He was employed by Oscar Mayer/Kraft Foods for 30 years in management, retiring at 50 years old in 1998. In preparation for his retirement he built what he considered the perfect man cave, also known as “The Shop” on his property.

Following his retirement he helped maintain the grounds at Oakwood Country Club for several years, was an avid golfer and scored a prized hole in one in 2017, enjoyed collecting and restoring classic cars and was an all-around sports enthusiast.

George was a strong man with a big heart, who never met a stranger. He was proud of his Greek heritage and shared that passion with his family. His wife and family are what he cherished most in life and was quite content spending days in his shop during his retirement.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 53 years, Charlotte; daughter, Angela (William) DePover, Bettendorf, Iowa; son, Gregory (Robin) Saklar, LeClaire, Iowa; four wonderful granddaughters, Alex Saklar, Sara DePover, Claire Saklar and Ruthie Saklar; stepmother, Thelma Saklar, Oklahoma; sister, Sandra (Larry) Galliart, South Carolina; stepbrother, Tim; stepsister, Dawn; and many other cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1976 and father in 2008.
