DAVENPORT - Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial for Anne J. Scieszinski, a resident of Albia, formerly of Davenport will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 14, 2007, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Davenport.

Burial will take place in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be today (Monday) from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home. The family invites you to join them for a Christian Wake Service at 5 p.m. to begin the visitation. Additional visitation will take place at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service Tuesday. Memorials can be made to the Croatian Crest Club, Moline.

Mrs. Scieszinski passed peacefully Friday, August 10, 2007, at the home of her son in Pleasant Hill, Iowa.

Anne Josephine Sulentic was born July 25, 1916, in Golden Goose, Iowa, the daughter of Milan and Ika Sulentic, Croatian immigrants who mined and farmed the land. She was proud of her Croatian heritage and was a charter member of the Croatian Crest Club, Moline. She was an independent soul who loved life, loved to dance, and lived every day to the fullest. She loved God and the goodness He has given, but questioned convention. She had a warm heart for the less fortunate.

She married James Scieszinski in 1949 and spent forty years in Davenport as a homemaker as well as a bookkeeper and cashier at Sudlow Jr. High School.

In 1988 she returned to her hometown of Albia.

She loved her children, who will miss her forever, and who dearly loved her. She had many friends.

She is survived by her sons, Dan, of Pleasant Hill, and Dick, of Des Moines; a daughter, Deb (Bill) Phillips, Nashville, Tenn.; a dear sister, Aunt Kate Paveglio; sisters-in-law, Donna (Ray) Benson, Betty (Ed) Conway, and Mary (Tom) Sulentic; and a brother-in-law, Jack (Blanche) Scieszinski.

She was preceded in death by infant twin children, Tom and Julie in 1954 and husband, Jim in 1979, brothers, Tony and Tommy Sulentic; sister, Mary White; sisters-in-law, Rita Sulentic, Blanche Scieszinski and Shirley Scieszinski, brothers-in-law, George White, Ray Benson, Eddy Conway, and Don Paveglio.

Anne Josephine (Sulentic) Scieszinski (1916 - 2007), born July 25, 1916 at Golden Goose, IA, was the fourth of six children of Milan (1886 - 1941) and Ika (Sulentic) Sulentic (1890 - 1973).

Anne's parents, Ika and Milan, immigrated to the United States from Svte Rok, Croatia; Milan in 1905 and Ika in 1911. Although Ika's sister Marija was married to Milan's brother Gaspar in Croatia, Ika and Milan first met when Ika came to the United States to marry Milan at Albia, IA on July 22, 1911. Ika's maiden and married name was Sulentic.

Anne was a 1935 graduate of Albia High School, Albia, IA and Cosmetology School in Des Moines, IA.

On October 22, 1949 Anne married James Daniel Scieszinski (1917 - 1979), son of Daniel James (1892 - 1974) and Mary (Comer) Scieszinski (1895 - 1983), at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Davenport, IA.

After living in Davenport for forty years, Anne returned to Albia, IA in 1988. Anne will be remembered for her love of dancing, politics and pride in her Croatian heritage.
