Gustave W. Jost, 74, former mayor and resident of Durant for 23 years, died at 10:50 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke's hospital, Davenport, after a brief illness.
Born July 12, 1886, in Germany, Mr. Jost came to the United States with his parents at the age of 2.
Employed by the Rock Island Lines in Stockton and Durant for 51 years, he retired 3 years ago.
He was married in 1911 to Hilda Anderson, who died in 1927. He married Clara Schneekloth Sept. 8, 1934.
Mr. Jost served as Durant councilman from 1938 to 1944 and was mayor of the town from 1944 to 1953. He also served as mayor of Stockton from 1914 through 1934.
He was of the Lutheran faith and a charter member of the Durant lodge of Knights of Pythias.
Surviving are his wife, Clara, and 2 sons, Allen E. Jost, El Paso, Tex., and Victor Schneekloth, Durant; a daughter, Mrs. Everett Clark, Tulsa, Okla.; 7 grandchildren, one great-grandchild; a brother, Herman C. Jost, West Liberty; 2 sisters, Mrs. Martha Harrington, Davenport; and Mrs. Lynn R. Parrish, Bettendorf. One brother preceded him in death.
Funeral services were Feb. 20 at Gloria Dei Lutheran church, Durant. Burial was in the Durant cemetery.
