Herman Lemm, Widely Known Printer Dies

Herman J. Lemm, 86, a widely-known Davenport printer, and cook, died at 6:45 p.m. Friday in Mercy Hospital after suffering a stroke on Tuesday.
Mr Lemm began his apprenticeship as a printer when he was 14 years old. At 18 he was the youngest member of the Typographical Union in the Quad-Cities.
Lemm learned his trade at the old Der Demokrat, a German newspaper. Later he worked in the Davenport Democrat and in later years at the Rock Island Argus.
After being a printer for 50 years he quit in 1936 to take up cooking which had long been a secret talent of his.
He cooked for the Hotel Blackhawk, Mercy Hospital, St. Ambrose, Palmer School, and several banquets for the VFW and the 40 and 8. He stayed with cooking for 17 years but soon felt the call to return to printing. At the age of 80 he returned to the printing business.
Mr Lemm, a Democrat ran for sheriff against Republican Frank Martin in 1928. He lost by 800 votes.
Lemm, who was born in Gross Pankow, Germany, is survived by one son, Hugo, Davenport, and one daughter, Mrs. Elsie Decker of Moline; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Runge Chapel. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery.
