Gerhard Heinrich Gottlieb Schmidt was born March 17, 1828, at Gestringen, Germany. He died at his home in Davenport, Iowa, on January 3, 1911, after falling down cellar that day at which he fractured his skull.

On April 1st, 1850, Mr. Schmidt left Germany for America, landing at New Orleans and went to Red Bud, Randolph county, Ills., and after a five years' stay there he came to Davenport where he resided up to the time of his death. He was engaged in the quarry business up to two years ago, when he sold out his business and retired.

Mr. Schmidt was married July 4th, 1858, to Louise Roettger. There were eight children born to them, of whom six are now living, three sons and three daughters, and 11 grandchildren. He also leaves one sister in Paris Crossing, Ind., one brother of Lowden, two brothers in Germany and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral was held Sunday at Davenport with services at the home and burial in Fremont cemetery. A great many relatives and friends attended the funeral.
