OBITUARY.

PRATT.

Word was received in this city yesterday morning that Prof. W.H. Pratt, formerly of Davenport, died at Minneapolis Sunday evening. Prof. Pratt had many friends here who will be pained to hear of his death although it was not unexpected. Prof. Pratt was about 70 years old. His parents settled in Illinois from Massachusetts when he was a small boy. He was brought up to work, finally became a school master, and came to Davenport in 1857 intending to start a commercial school. He became an instructor in one he found there and continued in the business until 1865 when he became teacher of penmanship in the public schools. Prof. Pratt, thought self educated was widely red on scientific subjects and was one of the founders of the Davenport Academy of Science which was organized in 1867. He had give up active work in the schools and devoted his time to the academy becoming its curator. He continued actively interested in this institution until he moved to Minneapolis in 1890, to be near his children who had located there. He has never been back to Davenport since he left.
