Obituary

KIRK.

James Kirk, the blacksmith and well known citizen, died at 3:15 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, at his home, corner of Judson and North streets, after an illness of six months of diabetes.

Mr. Kirk was born in Scotland Jan. 31, 1829, and was in his 63rd year. He came with his parents to Sharon, Pa., in his 4th year, and grew up there, learning the trade he afterward followed. In young manhood he came west. He was one of the earliest settlers of Topeka, Kan., and later came to Iowa. He was married in Davis county to Miss Mary Ann Shadley in 1857. He joined on o f the Iowa commands early in the war, and served faithfully. He was mustered out at this place and thereafter made it his home. He followed his trade here, working also in the employ of the government in the building of the bridge here. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church and of the Grand Army. He leaves his wife and three children, William, John, and Mrs. Ed Merrill all now living in Davenport.

The funeral will be held today at 2 p.m. from the family residence.
