The Davenport Democrat & Leader; Friday Evening, November 9. 1923:
Samuel Lorton Dies at age of 85 Years
Has Been Resident of Davenport for the Past Seventy-Six Years
Samuel Lorton, age 85 years, a veteran of the Civil war, passed away at his home, 2524 East Locust street at 12:15 o'clock this morning after an illness extending over two years. Mr. Lorton was very well known thruout Davenport and the middle western states, as he conducted Lorton's Nursery here for forty years, and had many sales representatives working thruout the oountry.
He had resided in Davenport for the past seventy-six years, and was admired by all who came in contact with him.
Deceased was born in Green County, Illinois, August 22, 1828, and was married to Miss Eugenia Solomon in Rock Island, 1866.
Surviving is the wife, Mrs. Eugenia Lorton, and one daughter, Mrs. Fannie L. Bryant of Chicago. Three grandchildren, Eugenia, Lester and Raymond also survive.
Mr. Lorton was a member of the local post of the G.A.R. He served three years in the Civil war in the 26th Iowa and was mustered out in 1865. During his life he was affiliated with the Presbyterian church.
The body will lie in state at the Horrigan & Son Funeral parlors until Sunday morning when it will be taken to the home where military services will be held at two o'clock Sunday afternoon. Rev. Ned Lee will officiate at the services, and interment will be made in Oakdale cemetery on Armistice day.
