Eseke
Monday afternoon occurred the death of Bernhard Eseke, at the residence of Mr. John Luebbe, Third and Harrison streets. The cause of death was cancer of the stomach. The deceased was born in Gross-Bodemgen, Prussia, about 64 years ago. He came to America in 1849, and settled at Pittsfield, Ill. In 1856 he came to Iowa and located at Walcott, where he carried on his trade as a carpenter. After the civil war broke out, he enlisted as a volunteer with Co. E, of the 20th Iowa Infantry and served to the close of the war. He received a small pension of $4 a month afterwards for disability incurred during his period of service. Mr. Eseke afterward settled in Davenport, where he was honored with the office of street commissioner, which he held for seven years. He also carried on a flour and feed business for some time. He was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge and of August Wentz post. Five children survive to mourn his loss. The funeral will be held at Walcott Wednesday from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Alex. Stockdale.
