Mrs. J. J. Kuemmerle Dies of Fractured Skull; Fell on Steps
A fractured skull, suffered when she fell on her cellar steps Wednesday evening at 7:45 o'clock, proved fatal to Mrs. Katharine Kuemmerle, 1118 West Seventh street, at Mercy hospital this monring at 7 o'clock. She was 70 years old.
Mrs. Kuemmerle was coming up the steps from the cellar to the first floor, and in so doing misstepped and fell backwards. She struck her head on the floor, the impact causing her to lose consciousness. Members of the family summoned the family physician, who ordered Mrs. Kuemmerle removed to Mercy hospital, where her death occurred today.
Born in Davenport
Katharine Werthmann was born in Davenport, Nov. 3, 1855, and had resided here her entire life time, being 70 years, and one month old at the time of her death. She was united in marriage to J. J. Kuemmerle at Rock Island, Feb. 14, 1871, the couple celebrating their Golden anniversary in 1921.
Mrs. Kuemmerle was a devoted wife and mother, and not only will her loss be greatly felt by her loved ones, but also by a host of friends who respected her beautiful character.
Besides her husband she is survived by two sons, Edward J., and Harry J.; two brothers, John and George Werthmann; one sister, Mrs Francis Thelkes, and four grandchildren, all of Davenport. Five children preceded her in death.
She was a faithful member of St. Joseph's church, which she attended all her life. The body was removed to the Fred N. Ruhl Funeral Home pending funeral arrangements.The Davenport Democrat & Leader; Tuesday Evening, December 8, 1925:
Funeral services for Mrs. Katherine Kuemmerle were held Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. from the late home, 1118 West Seventh street, to St. Joseph's church at 9 a.m. A solemn requiem high mass was celebrated, the Rev. N. J. Peiffer, acting as celebrant, the Rev. U. A. Hauber, deacon, and the Rev. William Adrian, sub-deacon.
The Rev. Father Peiffer pronounced the burial absolution, preached the funeral sermon, and officiated a the services in Holy Family cemetery.
As the funeral cortege entered the church, Miss Clara Ruhl and Miss Josephine Reese sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," at the offertory, an "Ave Maria," and at the conclusion of the services, "Nearer My God to Thee." I. J. Zimmer of Rock Island accompanied at the organ.
The pallbearers, six grandsons of the deceased, were Louis, Edward, John and Elmer Werthmann, Otto Zwicker and Fred Zwicker.
The funeral was the largest held in St. Joseph's church for many years. There was a large profusion of floral offerings in evidence.
