Old Horse Fancier Resident Here 63 Years, Summoned

Jacob J. Kuemmerle, 79, for nearly 63 years a resident of Davenport known to hundreds of farmers, fair officials, and citizens here as horse fancier and driver, died at 2 p.m. Monday at the family home, 1113 West Seventh street. Death terminated a long period of illness of some six years duration.
Mr. Kuemmerle had been retired from active business affairs for nearly 25 years but during that time kept intact his large circle of acquaintances and friends, made thru following up his interest in horses. These he bred for farm and other heavy work and for the race track. He exhibited at all fairs in the surrounding country. On the track he made a name for himself driving his own swift pacers and trotters and those of other fanciers. During his earlier years here he was employed at the Arsenal.
Born in Stuttgart, Germany, Sept. 9, 1847, he came to America and directly to Davenport as a young man. On Feb. 14, 1871, he was united in marriage to Miss Katherine Werthmann. To this union seven children were born, only two of whom survive.
The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1921 and Mrs. Kuemmerle preceded her husband in death Dec. 3, 1925. Mr. Kuemmerle was a life-long member of St. Joseph's church.
Surviving are two sons, Edward J. living at home and employed by the Art Stone company of Rock Island, and Harry J. of Davenport; four grandchildren, Adele and Alda Kuemmerle, and Theresa and Louis Gurink; one brother Fred of Upton, Wyo., and a brother and sister in Stuttgart, Germany.
The remains were taken to the Fred N. Ruhl funeral home where they will remain until Wednesday afternoon. The funeral will be held at 8:30 a.m. from the late home to St. Joseph's church at 9 a.m. where solemn requiem high mass will be celebrated. interment will be at Holy Family cemetery.
