Crushed When Thrown Under Moving Truck

George Richter Fatally Injured; Leaves Wife and Three Children

George Richter, aged 35, 423 1/2 West Fourth street was fatally injured Saturday afternoon at 2:15 o'clock when he lost his balance on a truck in which he was riding while en route to Davenport from Muscatine. In his effort to attempt to grasp the running board of the machine he was thrown beneath the truck, the rear wheels passing over his body and inflicting internal injuries.

The accident occurred near the Heinz farm, a few miles northeast of Muscatine. Richter was riding in the truck with H.C. Lutz, also of Davenport. According to Lutz, Richter suddenly fell from his seat and while attempting to regain his hold, he swung beneath the moving truck.

Before the truck could be stopped, the rear wheels had passed completely over Richter's body. Dr. R.M. Arey was summoned and Richter died while he was being taken to the Bellevue hospital, at Muscatine.

Richter and Lutz, who was the driver of the truck, had gone to Burlington a few weeks ago to work for the Matthes construction company of Davenport. The were returning from Burlington via Muscatine when the accident happended.

The body was removed to the Rankin undertaking parlor, Muscatine, where an inquiry will be held today at 9:00 o'clock by Coroner M.P. Goff. The body wil be sent to Davenport for burial late today.

Richter was born Jan. 12, 1888 in Germany, where he received his education, and came here with his parents when he was 17 years old, settling in Davenport. On March 22, 1912, he married Miss Hannah Kruse. He was a member of the Arbeiter Kranken Verein.

Surviving are his wife, three children, Florence, 11, Mildred, 9, and Gustav, 7, two sisters, Mrs. Martha Tappendorf and Mrs. Elsa Carstens of Davenport, and two brothers, Fred of Davenport and Bernd, Grand Rapids, Minn.

The body will be brought to the chapel at 433 Harrison street. The funeral will be held from the home of his sister, Mrs. Martha Tappendorf, 1543 West 17th street, Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 with interment in Fairmount cemetery.
