At 9:30 yesterday morning, Mrs. Margaretha Schmidt, wife of John Schmidt, died at her home, 1035 West Fifth street, and although her death had been expected for some time, it was none the less sad when it came. A year ago she was taken with a disorder of the stomach, which developed into a cancer, and finally caused her death. She has been confined to her bed for the past five months, and has been a patient sufferer since. She was born in Wiersdorf, Bavaria, June 21st, 1827, her maiden name being Margaretha Schricker. She came to this country with her parents in 1848, settling in St. Louis, where, on New Years day, 1849, she was married to John Schmidt, and three years later the couple came to Davenport, which has been their home since. In 1854 Mr. Schmidt purchased the property now owned and occupied by him on West Fifth street, and moved there. The bereaved husband and three sons are left: George M. Schmidt, shoe merchant in this city; Lorenzo, farmer in Cherokee County, Iowa, and Hon. W. O. Schmidt, lawyer in this city and member of the Iowa Legislature. The deceased was a sister of Mrs. Otto Klug and the late Lorenzo Schricker of this city. She was a faithful wife and devoted mother, and much beloved by all who knew her. The funeral will be held from the family residence, 1043 West Fifth street, at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon.
