From the Davenport Democrat, Thursday July 15, 1880 on page 1...
"One more good old settler has moved farther on - Mr. E. W. H. Winfield of Blue Grass. Born in Winchester, Va, January 14, 1792, and going to Kentucky in 1796, came to this county in May, 1836 with his family, took up a claim just back of Rockingham. He was skilled in making brick, and they began to be in demand for building chimneys in the village of Rockingham, he set to making them on his farm. He and his children kneading up the mortar with their feet. Thus were the first bricks made in Scott County, by the deceased. He leaves nine children - two daughters in Lawrence, Kansas, one in Cass Co., IA, one in Rock Island Co. Ill, and another lives at home. Four sons live in this county. He was an industrious farmer and a good man. The funeral will take place at St. mary's church in this city at 2 pm tomorrow." Submitted by Donna Lonon who received it from Joan McFadden in 1976.
