January 12, 1911Mr. Wm. Schmidt received the sad intelligence from Davenport, Thursday, that his aged father, had fallen down the basement stairs and fractured his skull, and he left at once. His father died that night, concussion of the brain having resulted. The following clipping from the Davenport Times gives the details.
“Gottileb Henry Schmidt, an old pioneer resident of Davenport, while making his way up the basement steps at the family home, 2125 Rockingham road, yesterday noon, in some manner slipped and fell to the bottom, a distance of about 15 feet, fracturing his skull. He was in the basement at the time and upon being called for dinner proceeded to climb the stairs which are rather steep and about 20 in number, and suddenly lost his balance, plunging to the basement floor where his cries and moans attracted his wife and others in the house at the time, to the spot. He was conscious when found and remained so for several hours. A physician was summoned and all that human power could do was administered, but without avail and last evening at 11:20 o’clock he expired. The deceased was born March 17, 1828, in Gertering, Westphalia, Germany and would have reached his 83rd milestone this coming March. Those who live to mourn his death are the following: His wife, six children, 11 grand children and other relatives.
