Dorothy Smith Popular Young Vocalist Dies

Is Summoned After Ailing for Ten Days with Pneumonia

Her Sweet Voice Still by Call of Death Angel

“Mother, I can’t see any more. The light is fading, and the room is getting dark. I known I’m going so please tell them all goodbye.”

These were the last words of Miss Dorothy Smith, when death claimed her from the arms of her mother. The tragic death occurred Tuesday afternoon at 3:25 o’clock at her home, 1117 Ripley treet, where she had been confined the past ten days with pneumonia.

Miss Smith was a well known and popular vocalist of the city. Her sweet voice and charming personality had won it’s way into many hearts and she was a universal favorite in local musical circles. She was always willing and responsive when called upon to sing, and made many friends who will always remember her for her beautiful character.

She was taken ill while at work at the Harned & Von Maur store, where she had been a bookkeeper in the credit department the past three years. Besides being employed there she has been studying voice with Mrs. Estella Mandeville since her graduation from the voice department of the Immaculate Conception academy in 1921. After graduating from the academy high school, she completed a full course in the voice department of the school, and has since been a member of the St. Anthony’s church choir. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella, and the alumni association of the academy.

The deceased was born Feb. 3, 1900 at Davenport, and was a daughter of Fred C. Smith, who preceded her in death on Oct. 1, 1919. Besides her mother, Mrs. Fred C. Smith, and a sister, Corarose, both at the home, she is survived by one aunt, Mrs. Mert J. Dunn of Minneapolis, and her grandfather, Al Thomas of Davenport, besides a host of friends and acquaintances.

The body was taken to the Fred N. Ruhl funeral home, and will be taken to the family home this evening. Funeral services will be held from the home Friday morning at 8:30 o’clock, to St. Anthony’s church at 9 o’clock. Interment will take place in St. Marguerite’s cemetery.

The Daughters of Isabella will meet at 8 o’clock tonight at the home to say prayers for the departed one.
