Floyd Dell in Tribute to Mrs. Feuchter
Deceased Woman was like Mother to Author When He Lived Here
When Floyd Dell, now an author of note with a home overlooking the Hudson, was a Davenport boy of high school age, among his best friends here were Mr. & Mrs. Fred Feuchter. He was much in their home, and they were like father and mother to him, and as his readers here know, Mr. Feuchter was the inspiration of one of the principal characters in Moon Calf, Mr. Dell’s first important novel. When he received word of the death of Mrs. Feuchter, therefore, Mr. Dell was prompt to wire back to the bereaved husband the following message of sympathy and of tribute to the deceased:
Groton-on-Hudson, N.Y., Jan. 5. Fred Feuchter, Davenport, Ia. Your message received. I am filled with grief and a deep sense of personal loss. Emma was not only a dear friend but almost a mother to me. You have all my sympathy. Floyd
