Fractured Skull and Concussion of the Brain are Believed to Have Caused the Death of Mortimer J. Hanchett - List of Surviving Relatives and the Funeral Announcement

Mortimer J. Hanchett died at his home 1514 West Seventh street at 8:30 o’clock yesterday morning from injuries received last Friday from a fall through the Filmore street culvert. At 6:30 that morning he was on his way to his work at D. Rothchild and company’s elevator. When along the rail tracks at Filmore street, he attempted to jump upon the rear of a switch engine that was passing by and missed his footing, being thrown between separate track bridges. He fell a distance of about twenty feet, had both of his wrists broken, and was otherwise bruised and injured. There was a small cut about his temple, which was not thought much of at the time, but it is now believed that this injury caused his death. His skull was fractured and concussion of the brain resulted. It was expected early yesterday morning that he would fully recover.

The deceased was forty-four years of age, born in the United States, and spent almost his whole life in Davenport. He was a switchman for the C.R.I. & P. railway company, and long been in the employ of that concern. He was very highly regarded by his employers and acquaintances, and was a member fo the Woodmen of the World, who will have charge of the funeral. He had a benefit certificate of $2,000 in that order.

The surviving relatives are the wife, Louisia, and five small children, Gustav, Ralph, Emma, Ewaldt and Oscar. Mr. & Mrs. Mason Hanchett, parents of the deceased, reside in the interior of Iowa.

The funeral will be held from the residence at 5 o’clock Friday afternoon with interment at West Davenport cemetery.
