The (Davenport, IA) Daily Gazette; Monday Morning, December 13, 1880:
Ryan
The home of Mr. Edward Ryan, teamster of this city was suddenly thrown into sorrow Saturday morning by the death of the wife and mother. Mr. Ryan left the house, No. 1107 Scott street, for the coal banks about 5 o’clock in the morning. Mrs. Ryan in apparently her usual health, arose and prepared breakfast for him. After he had gone away, the woman took to her bed again, never leaving it. She was found breathless by one of the children and the neighbors called Dr. Tomson was summoned, but too late. Coroner Bawden after inquiring into the particulars, saw no need of holding an inquest. The unfortunate woman had been in delicate health for sometime and the cause of her death was apoplexy. Five children, the eldest about eight years old, are left to the care of the afflicted father.
