The (Davenport, IA) Daily Gazette; March 15, 1880:

Barquette

Joseph H. Barquette, colored, died Sunday, 14th inst., at his residence of Fifth street, after a week’s illness, in his fifty-eighth year. Mr. B. was a non-commissioned officer in the old Fifty-fourth Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in the late war. At the time of his enlistment he lived in Galesburg, Illinois, where he enlisted to serve in this regiment, in which he acted with credit for four years. He was a man of fine abilities, and quite a prominent personage among his people He was his own worst enemy, and but for his failings in this respect would have made himself a good position in society. It would be well for old soldiers and citizens to lend a helping hand at the funeral, as his family are in reduced circumstances.
