The Davenport Democrat & Leader (Davenport, IA); Tuesday Evening, December 7, 1926:

Blackman

Mrs. Maria J. Blackman died last night after a general breakdown in health for more than a year, death coming about 10 o’clock. She had made her home in Kenosha, Wis., with her daughter, Mrs. A. W. Gillespie, for several years, coming to Moline three months ago.

The widow of Edwin A. Blackman, who passed in 1918, deceased was born Dec. 21, 1848 in Hull, England, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Pester. She came to this country at the age of 2 years, and made her home in Davenport until her marriage to E. A. Blackman, also of Davenport, in 1866. The home was in Davenport for most of the time, until 1880, at which time they moved to Pierce, Neb., where they lived for a time, later coming to Moline to make their home. They also lived in Cambridge, Geneseo, Rock Island and Steger, Ill., in which place Mr. Blackman died.

Surviving are three sons and one daughter, Harrison S. Blackman, of Rock Island; L. R. Blackman. of Moline and Clarence Blackman of Casper, Wyo., and Mrs. A. W. Gillespie of Kenosha, Wis., six grandsons, Edwin W. Thackham, Walton Gillespie and Richard Gillespie of Kenosha, Wis., John Albert Blackman and Wilbert Blackman of Rock Island and Edwin Blackman of Casper, Wyo.; six granddaughters, Barbara and Marion Blackman of Moline, Mildred Gillespie of Kenosha, Dorothy, Helen and Vivian Blackman of Casper; one brother, Edward Pester of Rhodes, Ia., and two sisters, Mrs. P. S. McGlynn and Mrs. M. G. Ogden of Moline.

During her residence in Moline, she was an ardent member of the First Baptist church and a consistent Christian during her entire life, and she leaves a host of friends. She was essentially a home-loving woman, and the warp and woof of her life was family. The four walls of her home meant the wide world to her.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon in the Knox funeral home, Moline, and burial will be in the family lot in Oakdale cemetery, Davenport.
