HEINRICH JARCHOW COMES TO HIS DEATH THROUGH HANGING
Old Settler of Scott County Took His Life Yesterday
WORRIED OVER TROUBLES
His Mind is Thought to Have Been Affected by Little Troubles of No Consequence
-------------------------

"Heinrich Jarchow came to his death by hanging with suicidal intent in the barn at the rear of his home, 818 Brown street, in Davenport, Scott county, Iowa, Nov. 13th, 1904.

"E.G. La Frenz,

"Otto Stolley,

"M.J. Flynn."
-------------------------

At about 9:30 yesterday morning, Heinrich Jarchow, an old Scott county settler, left his home, 818 Brown street. An hour later, his daughter, Caroline D. Jarchow, found his lifeless body hanging to the steps leading into the hayloft.

Dr. Ben Schmidt was immediately called and pronounced Jarchow dead. Coroner Lambach was notified and the inquest set for 5:30 last night at the late home of the dead man. After listening to the evidence the jury returned the verdict of suicide as set forth above.

Mr. Jarchow had never intimated that he had any intention of taking his own life. He was a man who had little to say to anyone, however. No reason for his rash act is known to any member of his family.

He was getting well along in years and of late had become very childish. He worried over matters which did not concern him in the least and it is believed that he worried over some small matter until he decided to commit suicide.

When he was found by his daughter yesterday morning, he was on his knees with a rope fastened around his neck. The ladder leading to the hayloft was not high enough so that he could stand on anything and then kick it out from under him, but he had evidently tied the rope around one of the rungs of the ladder and then around his neck and had held his feet up until every spark of life had left his body.

Heinrich Jarchow was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, July 17, 1825, and was 79 years of age at the time of his death. He was married while in Germany. In 1856 he came to Davenport where he engaged in his business as wagonmaker.

Two years later he removed to Butler township, where he farmed until about eighteen years ago, when he came back to Davenport, moving into the home at 818 Brown street, where he has resided ever since.

The survivors are his wife, Dorathea, four sons, William, of Douglas, Wyo.; H.F., of Davenport; L.J. of Luverne, Minn., and Herman, who resides on the old homestead in Butler township, and one daughter, Caroline D., living at home.

The funeral arrangements have not been made as yet as it is desired to hear from his son in Wyoming.
