THE ROCK ISLAND BRIDGE-

The St. Louis Republican is down on the project of building a bridge across the Mississippi at Rock Island, but it is evident the arguments of the Republican are directed by selfishness and one sided views. It objects to the building of the bridge, not because it would be an infringement of the general laws and interest in commerce, but because if this precedent is established other bridges will be built across the Mississippi and also over the Missouri river, thus presenting an undisturbed chain of railways across the country north of St. Louis and thereby diverting the rich currents of commerce she has so long and so profitably enjoyed, into other channels.
