Nadine Baker
February 2, 1924 - August 23, 2016

Nadine Baker, age 92, of Storm Lake, Iowa, formerly of Early, Iowa, died on Tuesday, August 23, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Nadine Hicks, a daughter of John and Vida (Waller) Hicks, was born on February 2, 1924, in Schaller, Iowa. In her youth, she attended the United Methodist Church in Early where she remained an active member throughout her life. Having gone to school at Delaware Township School in Nemaha, she graduated in 1941.

On October 7, 1944, Nadine married Philip H. Baker in San Diego, California. Subsequently, they were blessed with three children: Christie, Cheri, and Jane. In 1951, the family moved back to the farm outside Early where Nadine had been raised. The couple relocated to Lake Pointe Villa in 1998. She was the last of the original residents.

Nadine and Philip successfully operated a grocery store from 1961 to 1971. An active member of the Early Women’s Club, she participated in various community activities as well.

Nadine liked crewel embroidering, sewing, gardening, and reading. She, also, enjoyed cooking and freezing vegetables. Most of all, however, she cherished the time spent with her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Christie Anderson, of Norwalk, Iowa, Cheri (Randy) Johnsen, of Madrid, Iowa, and Jane (Dennis) Ausborn, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; her grandchildren: Major (Jill) Anderson, of Brookings, South Dakota, Marshall (Kim) Anderson, of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, Erin Kron, of Ocala, Florida, Nicholas (Brianne) Anderson, of Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, Eric (Lindsay) Johnsen, of Ames, Iowa, Ryan (Julie) Johnsen, of Slater, Iowa, Sara (Jordan) Kappos, of Urbandale, Iowa, Daniela (Bret) Engelkes, of Grandview, Missouri, Tony (Nicole) Ausborn, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Jeska (Josh) Henderson, of Strawberry Plains, Tennessee; as well as twenty-three great grandchildren; extended family members; and friends.

Nadine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Philip; her great granddaughter, Sarah Rushing; her son-in-law, J.R. Anderson; and her brother, Donald Hicks.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 30, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Early. Burial will follow in the Early Union Cemetery. Visitation will take place Monday, August 29, 2016, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
