Funeral service for Daniel A. Fanning will be on Saturday, November 26th, 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Nemaha. Burial will be at the Nemaha Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites by Merton V. Hare American Legion Post No. 325 of Early and Nemaha. Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation is from 7:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, November 25th at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City.
Dan Fanning, of Urbandale, formerly of Nemaha, Iowa, passed away on Monday, November 21, 2005, at Mercy Hospice in Des Moines.
Daniel Adelbert Fanning was born on October 15, 1916, in Sac County to William I. Fanning and Ida M. (Johnson) Fanning. He was baptized and confirmed in Nemaha United Methodist Church. He attended Delaware Consolidated School in Nemaha and graduated in 1935. Dan served in World War II for the U.S. Army in the 233d Engineer Combat Battalion and was awarded the Bronze Star. He received an honorable discharge in 1945.
Dan married Gladys V. Niemeier on January 1, 1946. He worked on the Illinois Central Railroad in Cherokee for 10 years before he returned to farming the family farm where he was born. He farmed until 1978 when he retired. He and Gladys went on many tours around the country. Dan loved baseball and played for the Storm Lake White Caps. He was an avid fisherman.
He was a member of the Nemaha United Methodist Church his entire life and served as a chairman of the church board for several years. He was a Past Master of St. Elmo # 462 of Early and became a 50-year member in February of 1991. He became a 50-year member of the Burning Bush Chapter of Cherokee in March of 1992. He was a member of the Commandery in Cherokee, Aubu Beker Shrine in Sioux City, Eastern Star and Past Patron, Early Legion Post, and Life member of Veteran of Foreign Wars.
Dan is survived by his daughter Darlene Post of Shawnee, KS; son-in-law Bob Lowe of Pleasant Hill, IA; son Jim and wife Rhonda Fanning of Joplin, MO; five grandchildren: Heather Post, Sean and his wife Gretchen Lowe, Shannon Lowe, Miles and his wife Lindsay Fanning, and Kelly Fanning; and great granddaughter Ava Lowe. He is also survived by his sisters: Marian Overmier of Las Vegas, NV, and Beulah Ignatiev of Los Angeles, CA; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Gladys of 58 years, his daughter Marlene Lowe, brother Don Fanning, and his parents.
He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and a dear friend to many.
