Wilbur Roy Currie, age 91, of Schaller, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Wilbur was born December 23, 1917 in rural Schaller, Iowa. He was the son of Roy and Martha (Siebrecht) Currie. Wilbur was a 1934 graduate of Schaller High School, where he played baseball. He enjoyed showing cattle and won Grand Champion for his Guernsey heifer at the local fair.

Wilbur was united in marriage to Evelyn Caroline Ploeger at the Methodist parsonage in Schaller on December 15, 1940. Wilbur and Evelyn were devoted to each other and their four children. They first farmed near Galva, Iowa, and in 1956 they moved west of Schaller, where they farmed until 1984.

Wilbur was very interested in improving his herd of Angus cows and shared his knowledge as a 4-H leader of the Eureka Hawkeyes. He particularly enjoyed driving his school bus route for sixteen years and watching his passengers grow up. Wilbur and Evelyn were strong supporters of school activities.

The family attended the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in rural Schaller until it closed, and then joined the Schaller Methodist Church. After Wilbur and Evelyn retired from farming in 1984, they moved to their current home in Schaller.

Wilbur was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Ethel Grotjohn; and beloved son, Daryl Wilbur Currie. Remembering Wilbur with love are his wife of 68 years, Evelyn of Schaller; daughter Diane Tapper and husband Ralph of Holstein, Iowa; daughter Darlene Raveling and husband Howard of Schaller; son Dwight Currie of Florida; daughter-in-law, Deb Currie of Minnesota; granddaughter Sarah Hummel and husband Ryan of Minnesota; granddaughter Laura Leary and husband James of California; grandson Tom Tapper of New York; step-granddaughter Linda Raveling of Colorado; great-grandson Mason Leary, step-great-grandson Zachary Raveling, and step-great-great-grandson Isaac Raveling.
