Obituary-A. O. INGRAM
Adalaska Oliver INGRAM was born at Ellisville, Fulton county, Illinois, January 18, 1855, the son of Andrew and Hester (HADDIX) INGRAM The family came to Ringgold county, Iowa, in 1868, Oliver, a boy of 13, walking with his father from Afton, where the railroad line then ended, to Mount Ayr, while his mother and younger brother Wilbur came on later in a stagecoach.
Oliver was educated in the public schools of Mount Ayr and a business college in Burlington, and entered business with his father, who was engaged in stockraising and general merchandising. Upon his father's death, Oliver (or "Ad" as he was commonly called by a large group of friends and acquaintances) joined with his brother "Wil" in the management of the family interests, but devoted most of his time to the general store in Mount Ayr.
He was married October 9, 1877, to Sarah Adaline KINSELL. Two children were born to them - Orr K. of Mount Ayr, and Vera H. (Mrs. Frank L. MOTT), of Iowa City.
After many years of retail merchandising in Mount Ayr, during the last few of which he served as the town's postmaster, A. O. INGRAM in 1904 removed his family to Indianola, Iowa, and later to Colfax, Iowa. In 1910 he purchased land near Ismay, Mont., which he farmed for ten years. Following a few years in the insurance business in Indianola, he moved to Iowa City in 1925 to make his home with his daughter. In 1939 his wife preceded him in death.
For about sixty years he was a loyal member of the Methodist Episcopal church, serving for long periods as trustee, steward and Sunday school teacher, and finding great comfort and joy in all the work of the church. He loved his family and was a devoted husband and father He had an extraordinary interest in people, and a kindly, generous and unusually optimistic nature. His friendly and helpful attention to a large circle of acquaintances was one of his chief characteristics.
He died at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, May 31, 1942. Surviving him are his two children already named; one grandson, Robert O. INGRAM, of Fowler, Colo.; one granddaughter, Mrs. Mildred (MOTT) WEDEL, of Washington, D.C., and two great-grandchildren
