OBITUARY ~ DOYLE DEAN SAVILLE
December 24, 1938 ~ November 14, 2017

Doyle Dean Saville left us for his heavenly home on on November 14, 2017 at the age of 78. Surrounded by his loved ones, he peacefully passed at the Ringgold County Hospital.

Doyle was born to the late Ansel and Ila (Sutherland) Saville on Christmas Eve in 1938 at his home, on the farm, in Blockton, Iowa, also being welcomed into the world by his older brother Wendell. He attended Blockton High School and graduated in 1957. Doyle married the love of his life, Jane Ellen Abernathy, on June 2, 1963 at the Methodist Church in Blockton. Following their marriage came four beautiful children: Stephanie Jane, Michelle Monique, Timothy Dean, and Jennifer Lee. Doyle helped raise his children with patience, humility, and love – teaching them of Christ’s love and ensuring they made it to church every Sunday.

Doyle loved to do all kinds of work and run all sorts of machines. Even as a young boy, he was always outside playing with his tractors. He got his first Caterpillar job with the Knapp brothers in Redding, teaching him all the ropes of running a dozer, and in later years with Joe Sobotka. After this, he went to work as a foreman during the making of the original highway 34 between Afton and Creston. That section of the road was always known as “his” highway from then on. Upon finishing Highway 34, Doyle spent his time farming, owning the first-round baler in the “country” doing custom baling. He later began tiling for Roscoe Brown, leading him to own and operate his own tiling machine soon after. He was also a heavy machine demonstrator for Brown Bear Company – taking their machine to many trade shows around the country. Upon retiring, or at least thinking so, he began to drive a semi for Keane Thummel Trucking. His grandkids enjoyed riding in the semi with him and Grandma all over the country.

Doyle and Jane left their home in Bedford in 2010 and moved to Mount Ayr. Before doing so, he celebrated, again, what he thought was his retirement. When they moved to Mount Ayr, Doyle spent a lot of time driving a dozer for both Gary Bjustrom and Landry McGahuey. Before passing, he was running a dozer for Jim Tull. Doyle’s true retirement didn’t come until the day he left us – always working in his garage doing all sorts of woodworking. Benches, shelves, dressers, and headboards – just to name a few of the many projects he did. Rarely being able to tell anyone “no,” he stayed very busy. Even if no one else had him busy with something, he always kept himself occupied. Doyle loved his children very much and never missed any activities of theirs. As the grandchildren were born, he became a huge part of each and every one of their lives as well. He was there every minute he could and held a special place in each of their lives and hearts. He spoiled all of his grandbabies – giving foot rubs, lawn mower rides, letting them ride in the semi, taking them fishing, teaching them how to drive the four-wheeler, spending time working in his shop, and always letting them hang right by his side. Doyle was always ready and willing to help anyone, stranger or not. He was kind, humble, soft spoken, and always made time to sit and visit. He is missed dearly by many, all who celebrate that he is in peace with his Creator.

Doyle is survived by his wife, Jane; his children Stephanie (Randy) Hosfield, Michelle Riley, and Tim (Jackie) Saville; his grandchildren Tyler (Maggie) Hosfield, Chelsey (Eddie) Daily, Lukas Riley, Shelby (Wes) McLaren, JJ Riley, Madison Hosfield, Kory (LeVon) Reiff, Bailey Mellencamp, Will Mellencamp, Lane Mellencamp, and their father Scott Mellencamp; his great-grandchildren, Eastyn Daily and Daxtyn Daily; his sister, Wilberta Weddle, and his brother, Wendell Saville.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ansel and Ila Saville; his sister-in-law Roberta Saville; and his daughter, Jennifer Lee Mellencamp. A memorial fund has been established in his name to be decided later.

Services were held on Monday, November 20, 2017 at 10:00 a.m., at the Armstong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa. Officiating was Pastor Bill Armstrong. Musicians were Nancy Sackett and First Things First Music Group.

Special songs were “Daddy’s Hands” (CD), “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” (CD), “How Great Thou Art”, “Amazing Grace” , and “Five More Minutes” (CD).

Casketbearers were Tyler Hosfield, JJ Riley, Lukas Riley, Will Mellencamp, Lane Mellencamp, Levon Reiff, Wes McLaren and Eddie Daily. Honorary pallbearers were Leo Dillon, Randy Abernathy, Mike Warin, Mike Olszewski, Jack Wyne, Kenny Powell, Daryl Holden, and Duane Schmaltz.

He was laid to rest at the Redding Cemetery in Redding, Iowa.
