Obituary

Leslie LeRoy "Nip" Wion, age 63 of Independence, MO, son of Fredrick H. and Byrdie [Akers] Wion, was born July 25, 1942 north of Lamoni, IA and died March 2, 2006 at Bames-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO.

Les attended Lamoni schools and later graduated from Southwestern Community College. As a young man, he worked the wheat harvest, built grain bins, and worked on the family farm. Les served in the U.S. Air force in Vietnam as a plumber. Following his honorable discharge, he drove a truck, farmed, and built grain bins. His home was the rural Lamoni and Kellerton areas.

On June 14, 1981 Les married Nancy Carolyn Deal at the Davis City R.L.D.S. Church. Les and his daughters were baptized together into the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (now the Community of Christ) by Elder Dale Killpack at Nine Eagles Lake.

When his children were growing up, Les took them to California and Virginia with him while he was trucking. He attended all their sporting events. Les was a big supporter of his children and was always "by their side" throughout their lives. He worshiped his kids and grandkids. Les was a good husband, Dad, Pop, and brother.

Les and Nancy have made their home in Independence since 1995. Les worked as a sales representative for Deal Engineering, a family business. He loved boating - the annual trip to Lake of the Ozarks, driving the boat for the kids to ski and tube, and just spending time with his family. He also enjoyed farming and was a big Kansas City Chiefs fan. Les was a member of the V.F.W. Les, Nancy, and their family took many memorable and fun trips - to Mexico, New Orleans, Colorado, Las Vegas, Hawaii, and a Jamaican cruise.

Preceding him in death were his parents; son Eric Leslie Wion; grandsons Aric and Logan; sister Peggy Wion; niece Cheryl Wion; sister-in-law Mary Maude Wion; and two brothers-in-law, Floyd "Joe" Deal III and James (Wilbur) Peters.
