Darlene Merle (Greimann) Weeda was born September 10, 1931, in Ringgold County, IA, to Nicholas Lyle Greimann and Zada Florence (Messinger) Greimann. Darlene graduated from Arispe High School in 1949. She worked as a hired hand for her dad doing lots of farm work including thrashing and helping operate machinery. She expressed childhood memories of her Mother’s sugar cookies and all of her siblings and herself going to the movies in Mount Ayr, sharing popcorn for one nickel.

On April 14, 1957, Darlene was united in marriage to Paul Arie Weeda in Grant City, MO at the Methodist Church. They settled on a farm southeast of Arispe where they lived most of their married life. Darlene spent many hours caring for the house, yard, garden and farm animals, along with her family. She worked at the Arispe School Kitchen and cleaned the Tingley State Savings Bank and Community Hall. Darlene was a member of the “Live Wire” Neighborhood Club.

The family later moved into Afton due to Paul’s heart trouble where Darlene babysat in their home. Paul died in 1983. Darlene painted and refurbished homes for Marion Austin for four years. In 1987, she moved to Lorimor where Darlene opened a licensed daycare for 24 years. She cared for over 51 kids through the years. In 2006, Darlene moved to her retirement home in Afton. Baking for her family and friends was her passion and took great pride in her flower beds. She made quilts for many of her great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Tingley and then Afton.

Darlene is survived by her two step-sons, Kenny (wife Marilyn) Weeda of Tingley and Keith Weeda of Omaha, NE; two daughters, Linda (husband Jeff) Grandfield of Lorimor, IA., and Teresa Kurtz (significant other Glenn Payne) of Oregon, MO; 24 grandchildren including their spouses; 32 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, husband Paul, daughter-in-law, Cindy Weeda; and four brothers and two sisters.
