OBITUARY ~ CLEONE (OVERHOLTZER) JOHNSON HOSFIELD
February 16, 1928 ~ August 14, 2017

Cleone (Johnson) Hosfield, daughter of Floyd Fletcher and Eva (Hill) Overholtzer, was born on a farm 1 ˝ miles from Tingley, Iowa on February 16th, 1928. Cleone graduated from Tingley High School in 1945 and attended two years at Simpson College. On June 14th, 1950, Cleone married Bobby Dean Johnson at the Tingley Methodist Church. Their home in Tingley was blessed with 3 children: Robert Dean, Richard Leigh, and Jeanine. Cleone taught school 5 years in Shannon City, 1 year in DeSoto, and 2 years in Tingley. After her children were born, she quit teaching to stay at home and raise her 3 children. When her children started school, she returned to Tingley High School and later the Mount Ayr Community School as a teachers’ associate for 25 years until she retired. Dean passed away on August 21, 1984. Cleone remained at home in Mount Ayr until her health needed more care than her family give her. On June 22, 2017, she was moved to the Ringgold County Hospital, then transferred to Clearview Home on June 10, 2017 where she spent the remainder of her life. Cleone was 89 years, 9 months, and 28 days of age when she passed from this life on August 14, 2017.

Cleone joined the Tingley United Methodist Church when she was 12 years old and attended regularly until her health made it unable for her to attend. Cleone was a member of the U.M.W., Tingley Lions Club, Tingley T Club, and Farm Bureau.

Cleone loved watching her 2 sons play basketball and going to the state basketball tournament to watch them play. She also enjoyed watching her daughter run at state track meets. Making quilts and afghans for her grandchildren; she loved to cook; going to dances; playing cards at the Legion and senior center; and doing cross word puzzles. She also loved watching her grandchildren grow up and her great grandchildren play and sitting with her in church. But the big day for her was when she would call everyone for “donut day” on a snowy day. It was a special day for her and her daughter, daughters-in-law, and later her granddaughters that could make it through the snow and the boys that just came to eat them when they were done.

Her great grandson, Bracken, gave her the name “BIG MOM” and she loved it and was known as BIG MOM by many of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. The license plate on her car says BIGMOM and she was proud of it!

On June 27, 1987, Cleone married Kenneth Hosfield and moved to Elgin, Illinois and gained 2 step-daughters Cindy Oddo and Pam Croker and 5 step-grandchildren. Kenneth’s passed away in February of 1997. In August of 1997, her children moved her back to Mount Ayr to be closer to her children.

Preceding her in death are her parents Ava & Floyd Overholtzer; husbands Bobby Dean Johnson and Kenny Hosfield; sister Arlene; grandson Richard Chad Johnson; brothers-in-law Keith Johnson, Lawrence Johnson, Clare Johnson, Marvin Johnson, Merrill Johnson; sisters-in-law Marian Reynolds, Cleone Thompson; mother-in-law Mary Edith Johnson and father-in-law William Albert Johnson.

Left to cherish her memories include her 3 children Robert Dean Johnson (wife Jenifer) of Tingley, Richard Leigh Johnson (wife Crystal) of Tingley, and daughter Jeanine Greene (husband Mack) of Mount Ayr. Receiving much of Grandma Cleone’s (Big Mom’s) love and attention are her 7 grandchildren Bradley Johnson (wife Becky) of Creston, Brandon Greene (friend Tasha Drake) of Kellerton, Annie Schweitzberger (husband Rick) of Grimes, Jana Brown (husband Jeremy) of Grimes, Shayla Collier (husband Camron) of Grand River, Jentry Graham (husband Daniel) of Diagonal, Shayna Mason (husband Robbie) of Mount Ayr and 16 great grandchildren; sister Jenesse Tull (husband Howard) of Tingley; brother John Fletcher Overholtzer (wife Mary) of Tingley; sisters-in-law Doris Been of Belmond and Crystal Johnson of Nebraska; step-daughters Cindy Oddo (husband Rick) of Illinois and Pam Croker of Illinois; 5 step-grandchildren; 5 step-great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews; best friend Peggy Wagenknecht and a host of friends.
