OBITUARY ~ BETTY JO (MEANS) SCHILLING
March 09 1937 ~ April 03, 2016

Betty Jo Schilling, second to youngest of seven children, was born March 9, 1937 to Jabe and Goldie (Hyde) Means near Corning, Iowa. Betty died April 3, 2016 at the Clearview Nursing Home in Clearfield, where Betty resided the last twenty months of her life, ending her battle with Alzheimer’s for many years.

Her family moved to a farm northwest of Afton, Iowa near her eleventh birthday in 1948. Betty graduated from the Afton High School in 1955.

Betty was united in marriage to Ernest Robert (Bob) Schilling on February 2, 1956. To this union, four children were born; Linda Sue, Charles Wayne, Karen Marie and Emilie May.

For many years Betty helped Bob on their farm near Jolley, Iowa where they raised their family. She especially enjoyed the baby calves in the spring and also the little pigs. Betty also was a cook at the Bible Camp at Twin Lakes for a few years during the summer months, as she was well known for her good cooking from all. On August 9, 1979 they moved to Rainier, Oregon near the Pacific coast. They lived there enjoying some of their retirement years until August 9,1997 when they moved to Diagonal, Iowa to live their retirement out.

Betty loved to hand quilt and she put many stitches in many quilts at the Diagonal United Community Church, as well as many at the United Methodist Church in Rainier, Oregon. She was also well known for quilting for other people and known for the many baby quilts she made for them and her grandchildren and her great grandchildren. She also enjoyed her many flowerbeds and her garden as she enjoyed being outside.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Jabe and Goldie Means; parents-in-law Sherman and Anna Schilling; sisters Pauline Olson, Edna Porter; brothers Kenneth Means, Ralph Means; sisters-in-law Janie Means, Phyllis Means, Mary Schilling, Emilie Schilling, Irene Hartling; brothers-in-law Dean Jones, Leonard Olson, Merle (Mike) Meusburger, John Porter, Charlie Schilling, Albert Schilling, Warren Schilling and Homer Hartling.

Betty is survived by her husband of sixty plus years, Bob Schilling of Diagonal; children Linda Herriges and husband Doane of Kelso, Washington, Charles Schilling and wife Bonnie of Ethiopia, Africa as missionaries, Karen Larsen and husband Ray Dean of Clearfield, Iowa and Emilie Garcia and husband Ern of Everett, Washington; grandchildren Bret Herriges, Robert Larsen and wife Kate, Kimberly Brammer and husband Aaron, Amanda Githaiga and husband Stanley, Michael Garcia, Bethanie Schilling, Benjamin (David) Schilling, Anna Schilling; adopted grandchildren Alex Schilling, Joshua Schilling, Bethlehem Schilling, Sarah Schilling and Samuel Schilling; great grandchildren Rylan Larsen, Brody Larsen Avalynn Larsen, Carter Brammer, Alana Brammer, Robert Adrian Brammer and Lilliana Githaiga; sisters Jessie Meusburger, Sharon England (Jim Routh); sister-in-law Gladys Hickman and husband Al; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, special neighbors and friends.

No services were held in honor of her wishes.
