September, 1985OBITUARY ~ ERNEST (WINK) ST. CLAIR
Ernest (Wink) ST. CLAIR, son of Ralph and Myrtle MIDDLETON ST. CLAIR, was born December 28, 1913 on his parents' farm in Marshall County, Iowa and died September 8, 1985 in Jefferson, Iowa at the age of 71 years, eight months and nine days.
Wink started school in rural Grundy County, Iowa. In 1924, he moved with his parents to Jefferson, Iowa where he attended school and graduated from Jefferson, High School in 1934. Following his schooling, Wink was with the C.C.C. for two years. He then operated a Standard Oil Station in Jefferson until he was married.
On February 26, 1939, Wink was married to Ellen HASTY at the Christian Church Parsonage, Jefferson, Iowa. They are the parents of two children, Richard Ernest and Jane Ellen. Wink worked as a hired many on farms in Greene County for three years, then farmed on his own for one year. In 1943, he purchased the home farm where Dick presently lives. The family raised livestock as well as grain. Wink and Ellen retired from farming in 1976, but stayed on the farm until 1970 when they moved to their present home in Jefferson.
Wink was a member of Central Christian Church, Jefferson, Iowa where he served as Deacon and was a former vice-chairman of the board. He was also a former Boy Scout Leader. Wink was a loving husband and father and left his family with the wonderful heritage of what being a Christian family means. He was a friend to people of all ages.
Wink was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; two sisters; and one grandson, Christopher Joseph ST. CLAIR. Survivors include his wife, Ellen of Jefferson, Iowa; one son, Dick and his wife Joan ST. CLAIR of Jefferson, Iowa; one daughter, Jane and her husband Robert THOMAS of Mount Ayr, Iowa; four grandchildren, Mike and Rod ST. CLAIR of Jefferson, Iowa, and Angie and Sean THOMAS of Mount Ayr, Iowa; and one brother, Franklin Dale ST. CLAIR of Colfax, Iowa; other relatives and many friends of all ages.
A service was held at the Central Christian Church, Jefferson, Iowa, on September 11, 1985, with Rev. Roger MILLER officiating.
The prelude was by Jane THOMAS and music by Mr. and Mrs. Bill McGREGOR. Hymns used were "On Eagle's Wings" and "The Lord's Prayer."
Casketbearers were Glen CARSTENSEN, Eldon LARSON, Jerald DEAL, Verle BENNETT, Nick FRIESS and Jim GIESE. Honorary casketbearers were C. P. Van GILDER, ROdney NEARHOFF, Glenn JOENS, Roy SCHEUERMANN, Glen COSENS, Don SIEVERS, and Jim PARR. Interment was in Jefferson Cemetery at Jefferson, Iowa.
Hastings Funeral Home, Jefferson, was in charge of the arrangements.
