March, 1986OBITUARY ~ HERBURT SOVEREIGN
Herburt Arthur SOVEREIGN was born May 14, 1910 at Gault, Colorado to Arthur SOVEREIGN (Hastings, Iowa) and Dora WITMER (Grand City, Mo.)
Death came in the night of March 21, 1986 at his home in Mount Ayr, Iowa, at the age of 75 years, 10 months and seven days.
He was marrired to Mona TRULLINGER LUCAS of Mount Ayr on September 27, 1958. Both were active members in the First Christian Church where Herb served in the office of Elder, a position of spiritual leadership in which he was serving at the time of his death. His date of baptism and membership was May 15, 1959.
Herb was self-employed as a contractor working especially in lightning rod installation on some of the tallest buildings in the Midwest, before moving to Mount Ayr. He fearlessly undertook almost any job in the construction and building maintenance field which was offered to him. Many persons cherish his expert knowledge and ability which he used to their benefit.
His hobbies and vital interests were almost as compelling and time consuming as his vocation. As a rock hound he was a handcrafter of beautiful jewelry; a fine amateur photographer; the organizer of the Ringgold County Chapter of Iowa Archeological Society; an active member of the Ringgold County Historical Society. He was called upon by teachers of our area to share his well-studied information on geology, archeology, Indian Lore, and photography.
Herb SOVEREIGN was active in community life, having been the Noble Grand of the Odd Fellows Lodge the past five years. As area representative of the American Bible Society, he encouraged distribution of the Scriptures and assisted many with their ordering. He was an avid reader and astute Bible scholar. To talk with Herb, one became aware of a vast storehouse of self-taugh knowledge on many subjects; perhaps chief were Bible history, philosophy and prophecy.
His children are: Milton SOVEREIGN of Maryville, Mo.; Sherri EVANS, Storm Lake, Iowa; Marilyn O'LEARY of Jacksonville, Florida; Gary LUCAS, Levenworth, Kansas.
His grandchildren: Carol HELFIN, Graham, Mo.; Rod EVANS, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Diane DYKSTRA, Three Rivers, Michigan; Joi ANDREWS, Jacksonville, Florida.
Great-grandchildren: Brianne WYATT, Jenna Beth HEFLIN and Adam DYKSTRA.
Services were conducted by Pastors Phil and Doris KINTON at First Christian Church in Mount Ayr, under the direction of Wilson-Watson Funeral Home. Music was provided by Mrs. Steve TRULLINGER, Mrs. Roger TRULLINGER and Mrs. Gary BICKERS.
Casketbearers were David HEFLIN, John TRULLINGER, Gene TRULLINGER, Kent TRULLINGER, Roger TRULLINGER and Steve TRULLINGER. Honorary pallbearers were Deane SICKELS, David SCHRODT, Lester SICKELS, William FRENCH, Elbert PIDCOCK and Milton HENDERSON. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemtery at Mount Ayr, Iowa.
