Sargent, Lafayette Dudley -
Lafayette Dudley Sargent was born January 12, 1844, near Hillsboro, Ohio, where he lived until 1864, moving from there to Morris, Illinois, with his father and mother, William C. and Emily C. Sargent. In 1871 he moved to Ringgold County, Iowa, to the farm, where with the exception of two years spent in Fort Morgan, Colorado, he lived until the 26th of January, 1919. He went
then to Excelsior Springs, Mo., for medical treatment, going from there to Colorado in the summer, visiting there with relatives and doctoring till the 20th of August when he came back to Clearfield.

In 1875 he was married to Mary Jane Crews. To this union five children were born, Jasper N., John D., Louis E., Nellie May, and Bennie C. All have passed on before except Jasper and Bennie, who with their mother are left to mourn the departure of the father and husband.

When nineteen years of age Mr. Sargent became a member of the Methodist church, and has always been a devoted Christian, a loyal worker in the church. He was a charter member of the Highland
Methodist Church southwest of Clearfield, and gave liberally of his time and means to keep that work going. He was a kind and loving husband and father, a loyal friend, a good neighbor.

Three brothers, Amos Whitmer of Minneapolis, Minnesota; William A. and John C. of Fort Morgan, Colorado; and two sisters, Mrs. E. S. Lynch of Ottawa, Kansas; and Mrs. C. E. Baker of Chanute, Kansas; are left to mourn the loss of their brother. Two brothers died in infancy, and one brother, Jasper N. died in 1872 age 29, and one sister, Mrs. Maggie Farren of Port Towsend, Washington, died two years ago.

Death came with welcome release from weakness and suffering at an early hour Saturday morning, February 7th, 1920. Funeral services were held at the residence in Clearfield at 2:30 p. m. Monday February, 9th. The services were conducted by Rev. F. N. Redinger, of Conway, using the text, "Precious in the sight of the Lord are the death of his saints". Music was by a quartet from Clearfield Methodist Church A large number of friends and former neighbors were present. Interment followed in Clearfield Cemetery.
