Charles J. Swan was born to Movus and Phiannah Kepner Swan, Jan. 27, 1875 at Byron Ill., and passed from this life June 19th, 1951, at his home in Clearfield, Iowa, aged 76 year, four months and 22 days.

Dr. Swan moved to Bridgewater, S. Dak., with his parents when he was five years old. He graduated from the Bridgewater schools and then attended state normal at Madison, S. Dak. and state normal at Wheaton, Ill. He was a teacher for seven years in South Dakota. He entered the State University of Iowa and graduated from the College of Dentistry in 1903. He practiced in Grinnell and Belle Plaine one year each and two years in Diagonal before coming to Clearfield in 1907.

Besides his faithful and beloved wife, he leaves to mourn his departure Mary [?] of New Market, [?] Zeller of Des Moines, Lois [?] of Indianola, Charles of Peoria, Ill. and Susan [?] of San Clemente, Calif. and [?] Swan of Red Oak, also 11 grandchildren.

Dr. Swan was raised in the Presbyterian church as a boy and became a member of the Methodist church at Clearfield in 1914 and was a regular attendant as long as his health permitted.

Dr. Swan was a member of the Masonic Fraternity and received
his 50 year certificate on May 19, 1949. He took an active interest in Community work. He was on the town council, being one of the main promoters of Highway 25 and had a great desire to see it concreted. He was president of the community club at one time and promoted
the Red Cross and other worthwhile activities. He served on the school board for 24 years and acted as president for many years.
He has been greatly missed in community activities since illness
caused his retirement, a little over a year ago and all have been brought to realize how much he contributed to the community. We join with the family in paying respect to his memory.

Funeral services were held at the Clearfield Methodist church
June 21st, 1951 at 2 p. m.. Clergyman Rev. C. E. McPherson assisted
by Rev. C. McCallom of Gravity. Burial was made in the Clearfield cemetery with Masonic rites by Don Foreman of Gravity.
