Hayes, Emma Agnes Smith –
Emma Agnes Smith was born to Ann and Michael Smith, on Feb. 2, 1871, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Teply near Mt. Ayr on Aug. 7, 1943 [paper says 1943, but it is in the 1942 paper], at the age of 71 years, 6 months and 5 days.

Her girlhood life was spent in the Taylor and Ringgold counties, On April 11, 1893 she was united in marriage to James F. Hayes at Maloy.
They came to make their home on a farm 2 miles southeast of Lenox. To this union five children were born. They are Verna Phillips and Gertrude Toland of Lenox; Dessa Teply of Mt. Ayr and Ralph and Arthur of Cedar Rapids.
In 1914 her husband’s health failed and they moved to town. He preceded her in death on June 30, 1918, leaving her with part of her family to raise fatherless.
In 1937 she went to Michigan to live with her son, Arthur. In January 1941 they came back to Lenox and the last years has been spent in Cedar Rapids.
She leaves to mourn her loss her five children, 3 grandchildren, one great grandchild, two sisters, Mrs. R. B. Dodge of Oakland, Calif. and Mrs. Mary Higgins of Des Moines, and also a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Walsh at St. Patrick’s church in Lenox, Ia. at 10 o’clock, Monday August 10. Interment was made in Fairview cemetery in Lenox.
