OBITUARY - MRS. J. D. TURNER

Funeral services for Mrs. J. D. Turner, who died at the home of her son, W. P. TURNER, in Lotts Creek township, Wednesday of last week, were held at the Rhoades Funeral Home in Mount Ayr Friday forenoon at 10 o'clock and burial was in Rose Hill cemetery. The services were conducted by T. S. RHOADES who read the following obituary:

In the passing of Mrs. J. D. TURNER on Wednesday, September 14, this community mourns the loss of another Ringgold county pioneer homemaker. The husband and father [James D. TURNER] preceded her in death five years ago. Mrs. TURNER has been a resident of the county since 1880, more than half a century having been spent in this county.

Mary Ann HAWK, daughter of Jonah and Eliza HAWK, was born in Wilkesville, Ohio, in 1852. She was one of a family of eight, all of whom have preceded her in death. At a very early age she suffered the loss of her mother. She became the home-keeper until her marriage at the age of 22 years. She and her husband began life in a log cabin farm home near Ewington, Ohio, where the two older children, Jane and William, were born. In 1878 they moved to a farm near Kewanee, Ill., where the third child, Charles, now deceased, was born. Two years later they moved to Iowa, settling on the prairie farm eight miles from Mount Ayr. This has remained the Turner homestead until the present date and has been occupied by their oldest son for the past 36 years and here she passed away at the age of 80 years. In 1897 they moved to Mount Ayr, where they built their present home, and where their two youngest children, Milo and Dell, grew up. Few women have given themselves more unselfishly or heroically to the business of home-making and the education of their children. In the last years, confronted by failing health of herself and husband, her one aim has been for the comfort and welfare of her children.

In addition to her five children she leaves three grandchildren, Barton TURNER, Phyllis GRIEVE and James TURENR; one great grandchild, Margaret Pearl TURNER, in whom she found the greatest delight and who added comfort to her old age.

In the years to come the memory of this good mother's untiring devotion to children and grandchildren will be their most priceless heritage.
