OBITUARY - GERTRUDE ELIZABETH MURRAY PLATT

Gertrude Elizabeth MURRAY PLATT was born on April 12, 1906, in Tingley, Iowa. She graduated from Iowa State College [present-day Iowa State University] in 1925 with a B.S. [degree] and worked as a nutritional social worker on the south side of Chicago. She married C. DeForest PLATT in 1930, and they had three children: Charles DeForest PLATT (Linda), John MURRAY PLATT (Ann), and Cynthia MURRAY (Jim SCHWING). Gertrude was preceded in death by C. D. in 1979. In addition to her three children, Gertrude had 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Gertrude and C. D. moved to Santa Barbara 36 years ago [1966] to enjoy their retirement years in paradise! Gert continued to work - as an editor and office manager - and volunteer - she was instrumental in the development of SB's recycling program, worked in co-op stores, and was quite involved in the campaigns of several of the city and state politicians.

A woman who lived her values and principles, Gertrude held her family as the most important part of her life, followed closely by peace, justice and the care of the world's children. She was a source of encouragement, love, and charity. Her concern for the world and those who live in it, searching for and continually increasing her knowledge, and her ability to attract marvelous friends were all positive characteristics. She was amazingly articulate, literate, and knowledgeable. Her engaging wit was enhanced by her intelligence.

To celebrate Gertrude's wonderful life, her family and friends will gather on her 97th birthday, April 12, 2003, in Santa Barbara, with the service of celebration to be held at the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara, 1535 Santa Barbara St, Santa Barbara, CA 93101.

In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to contribute to some of Gertrude's favorite charities in her name.
