GEORGE A. WYANT CALLED BY DEATH

Aged and Respected Citizen Passes to His Reward
After an Illness of Three Months.

After an illness of three months duration, during most of which time he was confined to his bed, George A. WYANT passed away at his home in this city Friday evening, December 1, at six o'clock. The end came peacefully. During his last illness Mr. WYANT maintained his happy and cheerful disposition and was conscious to the end. While his last illness covered a period of three months, Mr. WYANT never fully regained his health after a severe illness about a year ago, his advanced age precluded the possibility of complete recovery.

The death of Mr. Wyant marks the passing of one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of Ringgold county. During the forty-seven years of his residence in the county he was known as an earnest christian gentleman; a man of rigid honesty; faithful in the discharge of every duty. In early manhood he embraced christianity and during his entire life sought earnestly and faithfully to exemplify the golden rule. Those who knew him in youth, in young manhood, in the full bloom of manhood and in the declining years of his life admired him for his sterling qualities and at his death the community bows in reverence.

The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the M. E. church, being conducted by the pastor, Rev. Jay KIRKENDALL, assisted by Rev. Edgar PRICE, pastor of the Church of Christ. The funeral was largely attended by friends from all the communities of the county where he had lived who came to pay their last tribute of respect. The floral offerings were profuse and beautiful. The body was laid to rest in Rose Hill cemetery. The pall bearers were his grandsons - Hugh and G. A. WYANT, George and James TINDLE, Frank ROUTH and Charles CULVER. The flower girls were his granddaughters, Ruth and Helen WYANT, Esther and Opal CULVER.

George A. WYANT was born in Pennsylvania December 26, 1834, being one of the family of twelve children, six sons and six daughters, of Jacob E. and Margaret WYANT. He was reared in his native state, where he obtained the rudiments of his education in the public schools and followed the avocations of farming and stock raising. At the age of twenty-one he began life on his own account. In 1855 he went to Kansas, where he remained a short time and then located in Illinois, where he taught school in the winter and the following spring began farming. In 1856 he returned to Kansas, where he followed farming and school teaching until 1875, when he moved to Ringgold county and settled on a farm in Lincoln township and engaged in milling and farming. Mr. WYANT was united in marriage in Kansas, May 8, 1859, with Sarah A. MORROW, a native of Pennsylvania, and to them were born four children, two of whom, Mrs. T. J. TINDLE of Lincoln township, and James U., of Bedford, survive. The wife and mother died in July, 1891, and in October, 1892, he was united in marriage with Mrs. Elsie GRIFFITH and for a time Mr. and Mrs. WYANT made their home in Clearfield, until 1899, when they moved to Mount Ayr. The home life of Mr. and Mrs. WYANT has been extremely happy.

After locating in Mount Ayr Mr. WYANT accepted the position of secretary of the Ringgold County Mutual Fire Insurance Company, in which position he served faithfully and efficiently until three years ago when, on account of advanced age, he retired from the office.

During the civil war Mr. WYANT responded to the country's call and served as orderly sargeant (sic) of Company A, Twentieth Kansas Volunteer Infantry and was in Price's raid through Missouri. His church membership was with the Church of Christ at Clearfield. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity.

NOTE: George A. WYANT's first wife, Sarah A. (MORROW) WYANT died at the age of 62 years, 6 months and 9 days on July 26, 1891 with interment at Rising Sun Cemetery, Ringgold County, Iowa. George's second wife, Elsie Sarah (DAVENPORT) GRIFFITH WYANT was born in 1850, and died Febuary 24, 1925 with interment at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa.
