OBITUARY - RICHARD C. WITTMANN

ROCHESTER -- The funeral for Richard C. WITTMANN will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ranfranz & Vine Funeral Homes in Rochester. Burial with military honors will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr, Iowa.

Mr. WITTMANN, 91, of Rochester, died Friday [July 25, 2008] at Saint Marys Hospital.

Born September 24, 1916, in Lincoln, Neb., he graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1938. He entered the Army in August 1940, prior to the World War II mobilization. During the war he served in the Pacific Theater in China, Burma, India and Korea, then was part of the European occupation forces in Germany following the war. In 1962 he retired from the Army after 27 years with the rank of Colonel.

Mr. WITTMAN worked in the real estate and construction division of IBM in New York for 17 years, retiring in June 1979. He was also a general partner in WITTMANN Brothers Real Estate in Lincoln, Neb. For many years, he was a summer resident on Little Pelican Lake in Breezy Point, Minn., and a winter resident of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.

He married Karin A. PETERSON on June 27, 1992, in Pequot Lakes, Minn. Mr. WITTMANN was a member of First Baptist Church in New Smyrna Beach, where he was active as a deacon, greeter, usher, and Bible study teacher, among other positions.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Barbara (Dr. Timothy) BLANCHARD of Sioux City, Iowa; a son, James of Stamford, Conn.; a stepdaughter, Taci (Andy) JOHNSON of Rochester; a stepson, Todd (Vick) TREES of Pequot Lakes; four grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and three great-grandsons. Other survivors include many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anne; an infant son and four brothers.

Visitation will be from noon until the time of the service Wednesday at Ranfranz & Vine Funeral Homes.

Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; Pequot Lakes Baptist Church; or Mayo Hospice.
